Immediate Dentures

A smiling elderly woman with dentures

An immediate denture may be the best solution when complete extractions of your remaining teeth is unavoidable. An immediate denture will allow you to avoid the embarrassment of living without teeth. We will begin the preparation for this procedure before your teeth are extracted.

The first step is taking impressions of your existing teeth and gums to create accurate duplicates for placement after tooth removal. At your extraction appointment, your immediate dentures are inserted creating a natural smile you can be proud of.

What you should know about immediate dentures

In most cases, we have no way to check the fit of the denture in your mouth before extraction. Esthetic compromises may have to be made in some cases to compensate for inadequate space or structural concerns.

Benefits of Immediate Dentures

  • Immediate restoration of your smile.
  • Helps with adjusting to speaking with dentures in place.
  • They maintain facial structure to avoid an aged or sunken appearance.
  • Fewer appointments are needed to get replacement teeth.
  • Your immediate dentures will protect the extraction sites and minimize bleeding.

After Extraction

Great care should be taken to follow all postoperative instructions. Your gums and bone will recede after extraction, and regular checkups and maintenance will monitor healing and reduce problems. Temporary linings or tissue conditioners will be required to achieve an optimal fit and may need to be adjusted or replaced several times during the healing period. A permanent denture reline will be required to ensure a comfortable, exact fit after you have completed the healing process.

  • The professionals at The Dental Suite will advise you of the procedure that best suits your individual needs.
  • Temporary denture liners, tissue conditioner and relines are additional services that may have separate fees.
  • Consult our practice with questions about the benefits of an immediate denture.

Immediate Dentures FAQs

Do I have to remove my dentures at night?

Yes. Except for the first 24 hours, when we want you to leave them in until any swelling is under control and bleeding has stopped, you should remove your dentures at night to clean them and give your gums time to rest.

What can I eat after getting immediate dentures?

For the first several days, until you adjust to eating with your new dentures and any sensitivity due to the tooth extractions has resolved, eat soft foods such as pasta, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and soft-cooked vegetables. Chew evenly and slowly on both sides of your mouth to make adjusting easier and more comfortable.

How do I care for my immediate dentures?

Daily brushing with either a denture paste or mild liquid soap using a soft-bristle toothbrush or denture brush will keep them fresh. You can also soak them in a denture cleanser.

Why are my immediate dentures getting looser?

It is normal for your immediate dentures to feel loose over the first six months as your gums and jaws shrink after tooth extractions. We will periodically reline your dentures with soft liners to improve the fit during this adjustment period.
